BUTTONS FOR SALE
BUT00 - South Carolinia "Nullification " Button 23mm

Backmar-"J.M.L. & W.H.Scovill*/Extra Rich/No1"
Here is a button you rarely see, if at all and in dug condition, right from Charleston South Carolina. Very early button, In @1832 Governor Hamiliton had these made in political defiance to the U. S. Governement. The South Carolinia Militia soon adopted them, and South Carolinians knew them as "Nullification Buttons". The button very clearly shows the state coat of arms in an oval field surrounded by a wide, plain border containing the state motto "ANIMUS OPIBUSQUE PARATI S. C. " which means "Prepered in Mind And Resources" very cool!!!!. This flat, one piece button was made of a pewter type material and coated with copper or brass. Therefore when the thin coating chips away you can see the pewter material. This one has chipping on the top edge and one chip in the right center, which does not detract too much from the appearance of this rare button. The back clearly shows the backmark of "*J.M.L. & W.H.Scovill*/Extra Rich/No1", it is missing the shank.
I got two of these buttons from a very well respected relic hunter from Charleston SC. They were dug in Charleston SC not long ago. The buyer will also get a copy of the letter of provinance as to where they were dug. Great early piece of history from antiebellum Charleston, as it was the center of South Carolinia's, commercial, social, and military life. $375.00 Please E-mail me with your order.
